Recommendation to Reopen Chicago Police Department Misconduct Investigation
Summary
Recommendation to reopen Chicago Police Department misconduct investigation log number: 2020-0003028.
Executive Summary
Pursuant to the Municipal Code of Chicago (MCC) § 2-56-230(c)(ii), the Public Safety section of the City of Chicago Office of Inspector General (OIG) conducts reviews of individual closed disciplinary investigations conducted by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) and the Chicago Police Department’s (CPD) Bureau of Internal Affairs (BIA). Based on those reviews, OIG may make a recommendation to reopen an investigation to address a deficiency materially affecting its outcome.
BIA investigated allegations that a CPD member failed to report the theft of their duty weapon in a
timely manner, and allegations that two CPD members who found the weapon failed to make
proper notification to CPD. BIA sustained the allegation against the CPD member who failed to
report the theft in a timely manner and recommended a ten-day suspension. BIA also sustained the
allegation against one of the two officers who failed to notify CPD when the firearm was recovered
and recommended a five-day suspension.
