Under the direction of a chief performance analyst, the public safety (PSIG) intern will assist the OIG PSIG team in their efforts of conducting in-depth evaluations and reviews of the policies, practices, and programs of the Chicago Police Department and Chicago’s police accountability agencies (including COPA and the Chicago Police Board).

OIG is accepting public safety intern applications for summer 2025. Start and end dates are flexible.

DUTIES:

  • Assists with or observes evaluations and reviews of police and police accountability operations, policies, programs, and practices.
  • Assists with collecting, analyzing, and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data to identify areas of concerns and where improvements are needed.
  • Assists in drafting and reviewing Public Safety reports containing analysis of qualitative and quantitative data
  • Participates in community outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. Applicable coursework in public administration, criminal justice, political science, social science, or related subject area. Must be able to abide by OIG’s Confidentiality policies.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Interest in the work of the Office of Inspector General, including government oversight and civic engagement.
  • Interest in conducting policy reviews or performance audits/evaluations for a government or non-profit organization.
  • Some knowledge of, and demonstrated interest in, law enforcement, criminal justice, and/or civil rights issues.
  • Some experience developing data collection instruments such as surveys, direct and participatory observations, interviews, focus groups, and literature searches.
  • Comfortable interacting with and engaging the public in conversation to garner feedback.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and initiative on assigned tasks.
  • Consciousness of diversity, inclusion, and equity challenges across communities, including for underserved and underrepresented communities in the City of Chicago, and commitment to address those challenges and positively contribute to OIG’s internal culture of inclusion, respect, and community.
  • Capability to collaborate with colleagues from a wide array of technical and professional disciplines and backgrounds in and across all the office’s sections.

ANNUAL SALARY: Unpaid. Internships may be completed for school course credit.
