Under the direction of a chief investigator, the investigations intern will assist the OIG Investigations team with investigation cases assigned to OIG involving allegations of official/criminal misconduct, residency violations and waste and inefficiency by city employees, contactors, and others seeking to do business with the city.

OIG is accepting investigations intern applications for summer 2025. Start and end dates are flexible.

DUTIES:

  • Assists with investigative planning for entry-level investigation cases.
  • Assists in preparing reports of investigative activities, including findings of waste and inefficiency of city programs.
  • Assists in the analyses of work records and related documents (e.g., activity reports, time sheet records, financial statement)
  • Assists in preparing case management records to track investigations progress.
  • Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program. Applicable coursework or academic focus in criminal justice, public administration, or related subject matter. Must be able to abide by OIG’s Confidentiality policies.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Interest in the work of the Office of Inspector General, including government oversight and civic engagement.
  • Interest in pursuing allegations of official or criminal misconduct and inefficiencies.
  • Some knowledge of and demonstrated interest in government oversight and accountability.
  • Some experience preparing reports, fact finding, and records management.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and initiative on assigned tasks.
  • Consciousness of diversity, inclusion, and equity challenges across communities, including for underserved and underrepresented communities in the City of Chicago, and commitment to address those challenges and positively contribute to OIG’s internal culture of inclusion, respect, and community.
  • Capability to collaborate with colleagues from a wide array of technical and professional disciplines and backgrounds in and across all the office’s sections.

ANNUAL SALARY: Unpaid. Internships may be completed for school course credit.
