Follow-up Evaluation of Chicago Police Department’s Post-Firearm Discharge Policy
Summary
The Public Safety section of the City of Chicago Office of Inspector General has completed a follow-up to its October 2020 evaluation of the Chicago Police Department’s compliance with its policy regarding post-incident requirements for members who discharge their firearms, on- or off-duty.
Executive Summary
Based on CPD’s responses, OIG concludes that CPD has implemented corrective actions related to the evaluations findings to varying degrees. Of five recommendations, CPD partially implemented two corrective actions, minimally implemented two, and did not implement one.
OIG’s original inquiry found that CPD was not in full compliance with its post-firearm discharge policy and that its internal controls were inadequate, as indicated by the Department’s insufficient policies and procedures and poor documentation of members’ completion of return-to-duty requirements.
