Summary
Pursuant to the Municipal Code of Chicago (MCC) § 2-56-230(c), the Public Safety section of the City of Chicago Office of Inspector General conducts reviews of individual closed disciplinary investigations conducted by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability and the Chicago Police Department’s Bureau of Internal Affairs.
Executive Summary
Based on those reviews, OIG may make recommendations to inform and improve future disciplinary investigations in order to ensure that they are complete, thorough, objective, and fair. During its regular review of closed disciplinary investigations conducted by BIA and COPA, OIG identified a policy that may cause confusion around investigative jurisdiction for officer-involved fatal motor vehicle accidents.
