The City of Chicago Office of Inspector General (OIG) has published a new dashboard that allows users to search and explore City of Chicago data on reported crimes, including what kinds of crimes are being reported and where, and the rates at which the Chicago Police Department (CPD) is solving—or “clearing” criminal investigations.  Data can be sorted and viewed by types of data, such as crime counts and clearance rates, and by percentage change to view trends over time. Geographic categories include Citywide or breakdown by District, Beat, and Community Area.

“There is a great deal of public conversation—locally and national—about crime in Chicago, how it’s trending, and whether and when crimes get solved,” said Deborah Witzburg, Inspector General for the City of Chicago. “With the addition of this dashboard to our Information Portal, we hope to support transparency around these vitally important questions so that all those interested in that conversation are working with accurate, accessible information. I’m grateful to CPD for its assistance in our building of the dashboard.”

All information presented in this dashboard is based on data stored in CPD databases. OIG’s Center for Information Technology and Analytics cleans and vets City data and presents it in a way that is meaningfully accessible. Filters for crime categories, for example, vandalism, motor vehicle theft, or homicide, match offense categories defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS), so that crime trends can be more readily compared across the country.

The new reported crimes dashboard includes data from 2013. The data is typically refreshed monthly on the eighth day of the month and is current through the last update date.
