Roughly 40 Percent of Budgeted City Positions in 2025 are in the Chicago Police Department

Did you know that roughly 40 percent of budgeted City positions in 2025 are in the Chicago Police Department (CPD)? There are 34,568 budgeted positions in 2025 for the City as a whole, and 13,742 are in CPD.

Data Sources

On this dashboard, you can view City budget information by department or by years, along with multiple details.

1. Select Years

At the top of the dashboard, you will find three categories to choose from. To begin, select “Years”.

2. Select Budgeted Positions

Under Budgeted Amount or Positions, select “Budgeted Positions” from the list of options.

3. See 2025 Budgeted Positions

To see the total amount of budgeted positions for 2025, tap the node highlighted in the screenshot below. You can now see that the number of total budgeted positions in 2025 is 34,568.

4. Select Department

Let’s now refine by department. Under Department Name, Select “Chicago Police Department”.

5. See 2025 Chicago Police Department Budgeted Positions

As we did to see the total amount of budgeted positions for 2025, tap the nodule highlighted below to see the budgeted positions just for the Chicago Police Department. You can now see that the number of budgeted positions in 2025 for CPD is 13,742.

Dividing the 13,742 CPD budgeted positions by the 34,568 total budgeted positions gives us a total of around 40 percent. Using this method, you can view what budgeted positions are available for any of the departments for the City of Chicago. Give it a try yourself by clicking the link below!
