CPD Arrests: Census Map

What will you find here?

In order to provide an accurate picture of the rate at which Chicagoans are subject to arrests, this dashboard allows users to compare the number of arrests for each police district—the geographic units into which the Chicago Police Department (CPD) divides the City—with the demographics of the population of that district. Users can click on different districts to understand the spatial distribution of arrests across neighborhoods and demographics.

Some questions that can be answered with data in this dashboard are:

  • Which District has the highest arrest rate per population?
  • Does the population size in a District impact the rate of arrests?
  • Which Wards have an average of over 10,000 arrests per 100,000 people?

Data Sources

All information presented in these dashboards is based on data stored in CPD databases and Chicago Integrated Personnel and Payroll Systems (CHIPPS), the City’s human resources information system. Records begin January 1, 2022, and the data is typically refreshed weekly on Sundays. Data represents the information that is in the CPD databases as of the date of last update (listed at the top of the dashboards). The information in these dashboards only includes data from completed and approved Arrest Reports. Population data is from US Census Bureau 2017-2021 American Community Survey estimates and is aggregated by geographic area based on each area’s geographic intersection with census tracts.
