City Active Employees: Map and Census Data
What will you find here?
It is a legal requirement that all City of Chicago employees reside in the City. This interactive map shows the Ward or Community Area of residences for currently active City employees compared to the total residential population in the same area. The data can also be filtered by reported gender and race of employees and City residents.
Some questions that can be answered using data in this dashboard include:
- What Ward has the highest number of active City employees per 100,000 people?
- How many Black women are employed by the City?
- What ward has the highest number of white male employee residents?
Data sources
All information presented in these dashboards is based on data stored in Chicago Integrated Personnel and Payroll Systems (CHIPPS), the City’s human resources information system. Records begin January 1, 2004, and the data is typically refreshed daily between 4:00 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. CST. Information entered in CHIPPS in the last 24 to 48 hours may not yet be visible. Data is current through the date of the last update (listed in the top right corner of the dashboards).
Population data is from U.S. Census Bureau 2017-2021 American Community Survey estimates and is aggregated by geographic area based on each area’s geographic intersection with census tracts.
