Investigatory Stop Reports: Census Demographics

What will you find here?

In order to provide an assessment of the rate at which Chicagoans are subject to investigatory stops, this dashboard compares the number of stops for each District—the geographic unit into which the Chicago Police Department (CPD) divides the City—with the demographics of the population of that District. Users can click on different districts to understand the spatial distribution of investigatory stops and resulting pat downs and searches across Community Areas and demographics.

Some questions that can be answered with data in this dashboard are:

  • How does the number of stops of Black people compare to the total population of Black people in a certain District?
  • In what CPD Districts are citizens subject to stops at higher rates?
  • In what CPD Districts did subjects receive the highest number of pat downs?

Data Sources

All information presented in these dashboards is based on data stored in CPD databases and Chicago Integrated Personnel and Payroll Systems (CHIPPS), the City’s human resources information system. Records begin January 1, 2016, and the data is typically refreshed weekly on Sundays. Data is current through the date of last update (listed in the top right corner of the dashboards). Population data is from US Census Bureau 2017-2021 American Community Surveyestimates and is aggregated by geographic area based on each area’s geographic intersection with census tracts.
