Rory McHale joined the Office of Inspector General in 2018 as an Assistant Inspector General and currently serves as the General Counsel. Before joining OIG, McHale spent six years as a Public Defender. As a Trial Attorney at Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. from 2012 to 2014, he represented hundreds of individuals in the Southern District of California facing primarily immigration and border-related federal criminal charges. From 2015 to 2018, he served as a Deputy Public Defender for Contra Costa County in Martinez, California, where he represented adults and juveniles in trials and appeals, across felonies and misdemeanors. He completed 32 jury trials before state and federal juries and briefed and argued cases before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. McHale earned a BA from Ohio Wesleyan University and a JD from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.
